Man, if 0-9 is when I’ma see mine, being cool ain’t enough homie, I’ma freeze time like-that.

Drake had an amazing year. He dominated the music scene and surpassed all the other new comers. I decided to briefly summarize his past 12 months to showcase his growth. I might of left out a few things here and there but I think I displayed all the important highlights. Drake is currently recording his debut Thank Me Later album and it is set to release March 2010. We are all excited for its outcome. Anyways, I will keep this introduction short and you can check out my amazing Drake timeline, lol. Congrats on all your success Drake; we are all proud of you. “What’s your life like? This is how mines feel.

January
2009 started with Drake being on tour with Lil Wayne & Young Money. As you can see below, he was and has always been the quiet one.

He then shot a music video for I’m Still fly with Page. He performed at the ACC for the 1st time with Lil Wayne (t’was history!) and two songs dropped (Unstoppable x Every Girl). Everything was about to change…

February
Now, February was the month. So Far Gone was due so he teased us with mixtape samplers.

And then…. *drumroll* on February 13 2009, the anticipated So Far Gone mixtape dropped fashionably late as 40 would say. Shortly after So Far Gone dropped, Drake x Young Money shot a video for Every Girl. We celebrated and “Congratulations” was added as a bonus So Far Gone song. We all know Drake loves Houston, so he decided to chop x screw it. The month ended with a few interviews here and there oh, and here.

March
Drake co-starred in Chrisette Michele’s Epiphany music video, an LRG ad, we marked our 2 year anniversary (yaaay) and Drake performed Live at MTV Spring Break 2009 Panama City with Young Money!

The month ended with Jimmy Valentino and a Trey Songz video cameo.

Drake Talks ‘Light Up,‘ ft. Jay-Z

When I heard that beat … it was like, ‘Man, this is a moment,’ ‘ Drake tells MTV News of the Thank Me Later track. Who’s excited for this song? #ThankMeLater coming soon!

It’s done. Drake’s collaboration with Jay-Z, “Light Up,” is finally finished. The Toronto lyricist had been hopeful all year that he and Hov could connect in the studio.

“Everybody is looking for this one joint with me and Jay, so that needs to happen,” Drake told MTV News back in June. “My goal at this point is to keep making that organic music. I don’t wanna feel pressure now that I have a single and music that’s hot.”

Drake recently sat down with MTV News in his Canadian hometown and explained how the song, produced by Tone Mason and co-produced by his October’s Very Own cohort Noah “40″ Shebib, came to fruition.

The track will be included on the rapper’s forthcoming debut, Thank Me Later, tentatively slated for a March release.

Drake Is Myspace’s Best New Artist

Here is Myspace‘s interview back in May 2009 at Cal State LA also known as one of his best performances of the year. Everyone in the building knew every song word for word without him even releasing an album yet that “A Star Was Born” as Jay-Z would say…

(note that this an old video interview… the new one is transcribed below)

So, considering all the accolades that he has racked up in the past twelve months, Myspace still decided to name Drake their Best New Artist of 2009. But, as even he seems to realize, it’s the music, and not the hype, that truly got him here. Now, here is Myspace’s interview with Drizzy last week when they told him about the nod… wow a lot has changed since then!

Not that we’re going to offer it to someone else, but if you were asked to name your Best New Artist of 2009 who would it be?
You know, I always get this question and when I answer people always tell me, “That person isn’t new.” [Laughs.] That’s because there are people I just discovered this year that I think are phenomenal, like Kings Of Leon. I know their album came out before 2009, but I probably would have chose Kings Of Leon. Or Kid Cudi. He had a good year.

Looking back, did you expect to have the year you had? When you think back to when all of this started in January—
—well, it doesn’t really start in January. It all starts on February 14th, or the morning of February 15th, I guess. We were in Los Angeles, ironically, and it was right around Grammy time. [Drake’s mentor Lil] Wayne was going to the Grammys and we didn’t have any tickets. So we had plenty of free time on our hands and we released [So Far Gone] online. And I had, like, this nervous breakdown about it. [Laughs.] “Did we make a mistake? Did we do the wrong thing?” I was mixing real R&B singing with rap, you know? So it was a very interesting time.

At that point, you obviously used the Internet and MySpace to get So Far Gone out to people. Why do you think it was so important for you to put your music out there in that way?
I think the tools I used—which, like you said, were MySpace and my blog—created a sense of loyalty. I knew what my story was going to look like in the media. It was going to be, “New kid from Degrassi releases a CD.” So instead I thought, “Let me give it to you for free and you decide if you like it or not.” If you like Drake, then songs will go to Number One and awards will be given. And if not, then I gotta go back to the drawing board.
